By Amit Sar 1. Sun Protection More than anything else, sun protection will help to prevent the aging of your skin, The sun is largely responsible for wrinkling, blotchy pig entation (Lentigines, also called “liver spots”), thinning of the skin, broken blood vessels (telangectasias), dryness, texture changes, uneven color and some sun related skin diseases that make the skin look older. Daily use of sunscreen products with at least an SPF of 15 along with protective clothing such as full-brimmed hats, long sleeved blouses and shirts, and slacks instead of shorts will greatly reduce the aging of the skin and the possibility of skin cancer. Sunglasses will also protect the eyelids from aging and will help reduce crows feet by reducing the squinting which comes from sun exposure without eye protection. 2. Avoid Smoking Melasma has been considered to arise from pregnancy, oral contraceptives, endocrine dysfunction, genetic factors, medications, nutritional deficiency, hepatic dysfunction, and other factors. The majority of cases appear related to pregnancy or oral contraceptives. The infrequency of melasma in postmenopausal women on estrogen replacement suggests that estrogen alone is not the cause. In more recent experience, combination treatment using estrogen plus progestational agents is being used in postmenopausal women, and melasma is being observed in some of these older women who did not have melasma during their pregnancies. Sun exposure would appear to be a stimulating factor in predisposed individuals. Although a few cases within families have been describe, melasma should not be considered a heritable disorder. 3. Fitness With age, extra weight can accumulate in areas under the chin, the neck or cheeks, giving the skin an older look. Other areas of skin such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and calves look older if they are carrying excess fat. A combination of balanced nutrition and exercise can greatly improve the appearance of the skin. Drinking enough water is also important. Improved muscle tone and improved circulation also help to keep that younger looking skin we would all like to maintain. Some excess fat can be removed by liposuction; however, it is much better not to accumulate that excess weight in the first place. 4. Smile! Your face tends to conform to the position or expression that you carry most of the time. If you often frown or scowl you skin is more likely to develop lines or wrinkles between the eyes, down turning lines at the corners of the mouth, or other lines or furrows that conform to the frowning facial expression. a smiling, pleasant, relaxed expression is goof for your face and will help keep you looking younger. 5. Sleeping Positions Sleeping on your face can cause sleep wrinkles. Sleeping in the same position most of the night for years can permanently crease your skin. With a small pillow under the lumbar (lower) spine, it is possible to sleep on your back comfortably without causing wrinkles on your face. 6. Skin Care Consistent skin care is important in maintaining younger looking skin. In recent years, several products appear to cause an improvement in aged skin. Although Retin-A has received a lot of publicity and does seem to improve the appearance of skin over a period of time, it can cause skin irritation, sun sensitivity, peeling, and requires a medical prescription. Alpha hydroxy acids also appear to achieve remarkable results in giving the skin a younger look and lacks most of the irritating side effects seen with prescription products. 7. Moles As young children, most people have few, if any moles. Most moles appear as we grow older. We may look older than we are if we have numerous or unsightly moles, especially on the face. Moles can be easily removed by a skilled dermatologist or plastic surgeon. This can greatly improve the appearance of the skin and give it a younger, smoother look. 8. Blood Vessels As we age, extra blood vessels appear on the skin. Three types of blood vessels are most common. 1. Telangectasias are blood vessel lines and blotches that occur on the face, neck, and upper chest. These are caused from sun damage, flushing or blushing, some skin diseases such as adult acne (acne rosacea) and excessive use of cortisone-type skin creams. Other activities which greatly increase the blood flow to the face such as vigorous exercise, hot spicy foods and drinks, alcohol, hottubs, etc. may aggravate this problem. It may be possible to prevent telangectasias due to flushing by using a cold damp towel on the face during vigorous exercise, during use of hot tubs or at other times when there is marked facial flushing. Sun protection with sunscreen products and a hat can also help to prevent this problem. Telangectasias are best removed with Krypton, KTP, copper vapor, continuous wave dye, or flash lamp pulsed dye lasers. 2. Cherry angiomas are small bright red, mole-like spots on the skin. These spots are easily removed with laser, electrocautery, or surgery. Getting rid of these lesions will remove one of the tell-tale signs of aging. 3. Spider and varicose veins appear on the legs with age. These are most often caused by heredity, hormones, and pregnancies. Sclerotherapy (injections) and new simple surgical techniques can easily remove most of these vessels giving the legs a younger look. 9. Brown Blotches Brown blotches occur on the skin with age. These include freckles, liver spots (lentigines), and uneven pigmentation (melasma) which usually occurs in women because of a combination of sun exposure and estrogen type hormones either naturally or in birth control pills. The Phaze 13 Pigment Gel, or NuCelle Mandelic Serum 10-15%, and prescription medications can both help. Laser treatment, dermabrasion (skin sanding), chemical peels, and liquid nitrogen freezing can also improve these pigmented blotches. These procedures are performed by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. 10. Other Skin Blemishes Show Your Age Waxy scaling yellow, brown bumps (seborrheic keratoses) and fleshy tags (skin tags) occur with age and make the skin look older. Enlarged oil glands and small cysts commonly appear on the face with age. These small skin lesions are easily removed by a dermatologist using simple office surgical procedures, liquid nitrogen freezing or lasers. A clear complexion without all of these little distractions, gives a much younger look to the skin. Pharmaskincare products are the unique result of modern biotechnology and dermatological research combined with centuries of scientific observation. These remarkable skin care formulations are not made by companies that spend most of their time selling lipsticks and perfumes, nor are they based on trendy or “secret” ingredients. The biology of skin is too complex for an individual ingredient to solve its problems, and treating the surface is not enough. That’s why any constituent of a Pharmaskincare product has not only a specific function, it must also interact with the other constituents in the formula. The whole must be greater than the sum of its parts. Pharmaskincare products have been created to treat every aspect of skin care under all kinds of conditions, ranging from natural aging processes to UV damage to environmental assaults to stress and metabolic deficiencies. In addition, the active principles have been tested and retested on all skin types at all stages of skin development from youth to maturity, from acne to menopause, from excessive oiliness to age spots. Is Your Menu Leaving Money On The Table?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Bill Paul Believe it or not, over 90% of all menus are leaving money in the table for a number of reasons. In fact, based on my experience with restaurants over the past 20 years, the measurable impact of this loss ranges from $.25- 1.50 for every mean served in the restaurant. Based on the number of meals sold in most restaurant companies, this adds up to a lot of lost dollars! The following list highlights the top ten factors which contribute to this huge loss of income. Use this checklist to determine how your menu stacks up. 1. Does the menu primarily have a creative orientation? When revising the menu, is the primary consideration the look of the menu (design, size, format, color, etc.) If the answer is yes, your menu is guaranteed to be losing money. Rather, is it most important to first develop a well planned merchandising and marketing strategy for the menu? After this strategy is determined, creative should be used to support the strategy. 2. Is the menu democratic? Do all product names and their descriptive copy have equal appeal? To be most effective, there needs to be a product continuum of appeal which reflects what we want or need to sell. All products may taste good, but some need to be communicated as being more desirable. In other words, those products we want or need to sell should sound better than those we do not. 3. Also related to point #2, is there a clear priority for what you want to sell? We humans can process a limited amount of information and because most people prefer not to spend a lot of time trying to figure out the menu, it is critical to determine what you want or need to sell. In fact, all products should be prioritized from most preferred through least preferred. 4. Do you view the menu as real estate? In fact, the menu is the most important real estate the company owns, since it will generate the overwhelming majority of the companys sales and profits. A very important part of the menu strategy is to assign appropriate units of real estate to the individual tenants, (i.e. products) on the menu. Obviously, important tenants receive premium real estate, while less important tenants receive poorer locations. 5. It is amazing that most menus do not answer the basic questions that guests want answered: - Whats really good? - What are the restaurants signature items? - What should I order right now? How well does your menu answer these questions? 6. Can the guests read the menu quickly and process its content efficiently? Or, is the menu difficult to navigate because it contains too much information, is overwhelming, confusing, or even too stimulating? Again, because of the inherent processing and time limitations discussed before, the menu needs to help the guest process its content, not make it more difficult. 7. How focused is the menu? Are the most important categories and products clearly emphasized? A good way of understanding this point is to view the menu as needing to have a tour guide built into it. When the menu has a clear cut starting point, then the tour guide leads the reader through the menu on a very definite and strategic review of the menu. Without a tour guide, the reader will certainly get lost and have a difficult time appreciating your restaurant/menus most unique features/products. 8. Do you copy the competition? Whether it is the type or style of menu, design characteristics, or even products and merchandising, there are hazards involved with this approach. Remember the statement that 90% of all menus have problems? Then why copy other menus when they have such a high probability of being wrong? You can gain more by developing a strategy that reflects your restaurants uniqueness rather than copying somebody elses. 9. Check out the following rules of thumb and see if they apply in your restaurant: -If you sell entre specials, do they represent at least 20% of the entre menu mix? -Do 20% of your guests order and appetizer or dessert with their meal? If the answer is no to either question, your menu is underachieving. Please note: these guidelines apply to casual and dinner house restaurants. With higher priced concepts, the percentages should be even higher. 10. Finally, how are products listed within their specific categories- in one single column or in two or even three columns? Primacy and recency are psychological principles stating that people are best at processing information that they see first or last. These principles can be best applied when using single columns. Using multiple columns decreased the likelihood of definitively predicting and influencing what information the guest is processing. So, how did you do? Did you find room for improvement in your menu? How much opportunity does your menu have to generate profit dollars? Aloe Vera, an Alternative That Will Improve Your Looks and Your Outlook

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Arthur Comer Do you remember your teen years? Remember that schoolmate that had a less than perfect complexion and always seemed to be the object of cruel comments? Sure, you can relate to what Im saying! Perhaps it was even you at the receiving end of those comments. Unfortunate as it may be, as a teenager, our outward appearance plays a vital role in issues of self-esteem. Our peers often exasperate the tiniest of imperfections that we may have, making them a Goliath in our life. Many of us needlessly suffered the humiliation of being called toad-face, wart hog or other disparaging names. Mother Nature provides a simple effective treatment for most diseases of the skin, especially those that frequently occur with most young adults. In use for thousands of years, Aloe Vera, a natural and safe remedy, effectively treats skin diseases like acne, eczema, herpes, psoriasis and many others. When prescribed medications failed, many frustrated patients tried Aloe Vera and achieved outstanding results. Why more dermatologists do not recommend all-natural Aloe Vera as a first-step treatment, rather than subjecting their patients to less effective and more costly drugs, is a mystery. Aloe Vera is time-tested and proven by many clinical studies to be safe and effective, and unlike most prescribed drugs, allergic reactions and other side effects are virtually nonexistent. Lets rid our young adults of this robber (skin diseases) of self-esteem. Arthur Comer is the owner and general manager of ALCJR Enterprises, a Midlothian, Virginia-based mail order Company that grows and retails Aloe Vera, Tillandsia and Anthurium plants. Of Pentacles

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Aidan Maconachy Central to this post is a symbol. A five pointed star, frequently referred to as a pentacle. No symbol has been the subject of more misinformation, disinformation and superstitious conjecture than the pentacle. Some Christians claim it is a symbol of the devil. Others associate it with diabolism and black magic. The truth is much less sensational. The five pointed star isn’t a symbol exclusive to pagans. It has a long history. The pentacle or pentagram symbolizes the elements of nature and the spirit that animates creation. The upper point symbolizes spirit, and the four other points - the elements of earth, water, fire and air respectively. That’s as sinister as it gets. No devil or other horned denizen of the deep involved. The five pointed star can of course be adapted and used in religious and magical rites for all sorts of different purposes. But the adaptation of the symbol by a given group introduces a secondary meaning peculiar to that group’s purpose. The truth is, religious symbols are often used in ways for which they weren’t originally intended. For example the KKK makes use of the symbol of the fiery cross. Obviously a Grand Wizard’s understanding of the efficacy of the symbol will differ significantly from that of Pope Benedict XVI. The pentacle is an ancient symbol. The Pythagoreans associated it with “life” and “health”. It was sometimes named Pentalpha, a reference to the interlacing of the birth letters. The pentacle is also associated with the Egyptian goddess Isis and sometimes called “the star of Isis”. Again the meaning is entirely positive and in no way associated with “the dark side” - unless you happen to be Pat Robertson on a particularly paranoid day. The pentacle also happens to be the central religious symbol of the Church of Wicca - a Church with over 400,000 members in the USA alone. In addition, there are roughly 1,800 active-duty Wiccans serving in the US military. These are proud Americans with constitutional rights like any other citizen … and yet, when Wiccan service people fall in action their Church is denied the right to place the pentacle on their gravestone as a religious marker. Since service people of every other religion are entitled to the religious marker of their choice in the case of their passing, it appears on the surface that the banning of the pentacle is outright discrimination. In a cemetery aptly named Circle Sanctuary, lie the remains of a Vietnam veteran and a Korean war veteran named Jerome Birnbaum. A memorial to Sgt Patrick Stewart, a Wiccan who served in the Nevada National Guard, is also in the cemetery. Stewart lost his life while on active duty in Afghanistan. In November 2006, Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs on behalf of Circle Sanctuary, arguing that the constitutional rights of Wiccans are being violated by the refusal of the military to allow the Wiccan pentacle as a religious gravestone marker. Actively involved in this lawsuit is a Wiccan priestess, Selena Fox, and the widows of Stewart and Birnbaum. I think it is demeaning that the families of men who died in the service of their country have to plead their case to the authorities. The pentacle has long been a symbol sacred to the Wiccan community. The refusal to place the symbol as a grave marker clearly relates to some of the outdated perceptions I mentioned at the top of this post. Time to move on. About Culinary Schools

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Jonathan Mayheart Cooking is a set up of an art, this has been established many years ago. There are many people who claim that they can cook and, likely, they possibly can. A lot people learn to cook as they grow up when it plays a part in their family kitchen. There are many different kinds of cooks, in diners, short order cooks as well as the list goes on. If you want to be called a chef, you will have to go through years of training at a culinary institute. Once talking about a culinary institute, it is a college that gives its students the gain of learning how to prepare culinary masterpieces as well as luscious deserts. It is more than just cooking, it is an art form. There are diverse stages of skill acquisition and the student chooses the area that they would like to study. The necessary training and the skills a student learns when it plays a part in culinary school will define the area in which they will perfect their art. There are several different areas of expertise that a student can select. A few of the choices would be a pastry chef or a bread chef. Searching as well as finding the right culinary school is going to be a tough decision. It is a must to research the institutes that you are interested in to find one that offers the courses you want. It is recommended that you locate one close to where you live to abstain dorm charges. There are thousands of culinary schools throughout the United States, and many more at random the world. There are a few culinary institutes that award online courses. Charge of going to a culinary learning institute may be strikingly high, attending a culinary institute will be extremely costly. There are grants and scholarships reachable to aid when it plays a part in the overhead. Both private companies and government agencies produce these grants as well as scholarships. Each student is demanded to buy a formulate of cutlery, uniform as well as distinct slip-resistant shoes. This is when it comes to addition to schoolbooks and other supplies that are demanded. The courses that culinary schools grant are more than just cooking. Standard school like classes of Math, English, history, etc. are also taught considering they are used when it comes to the classroom. The hours for class time are long as well as varied. They are not the regular hours, caused by the hands on training that the students receive. In the more complicated classes, students prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for the rest of the school. When a student is near graduation, they are placed in a restaurant kitchen to get the practical training that they need. It is here where they will expand their skills and kick off to perform a name for themselves. There are some culinary institutes that will award placement upon graduation. The student’s skills are matched with a correct restaurant type as well as a task is waiting for them once they graduate. Once a student graduates from culinary school, they are armed with the skill that they need to succeed when it comes to the fast paced restaurant world. He or she will define who they are with the types of dishes they develop. Sewing Machines: Making a Comeback?

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Kathryn Whittaker While we dont have to rely on sewing machines to satisfy our basic clothing needs, more and more people today turn to sewing to create unique, luxurious, one-of-a-kind pieces. Every family has that hand embroidered grandmothers table cloth or a hand-made quilt, and these pieces are as cherished as the most sophisticated haute couture creations. And instead of paying hefty sums to someone for creating these little pieces of luxury for you, you can develop the easy skills of making your own monograms, embroideries or even hand-sewn button-holes all the little luxuries that make the difference. With the help of a reliable sewing machine, you can instantly personalize a lot of everyday necessities. For example, you can create a set of unique napkins or add a classy touch to your bed linen and bath towels with a monogram. And with a little practice you can even alter and mend your clothes. When choosing your first sewing machine, make sure you understand how much sewing you plan to do. The honest answer will save you money and time, as you will not pick a too complex and upscale sewing machine for your basic sewing needs. If you plan to study sewing and even recreate expensive designer clothes to save money, you will need a more upscale sewing machine. Sewing your own clothes makes sense only if your sewing skills are high enough to recreate high-end clothes, such as suits, jackets and dresses. You wont save money on sewing your own jeans, because the pattern, fabric, buttons, and the time spent will make this pair of jeans more expensive than any of the designer creations. However, sewing childrens clothes does make sense, because you need little fabric, and you dont really need complicated patterns. A sewing machine is a great investment for those who have a passion for clothes design and like to wear one-of-a-kind pieces and dont want to limit their clothing choices to what they see in department stores. With a sewing machine and a little patience you have full control on where the pockets go, what kind of buttons you use, and where the hemline stops. You should be aware that creating clothes from scratch or even amending the existing pattern requires sewing skills and a lot of time and devotion. A more practical use for sewing machines is mending and altering the clothes you already have. We all have that special pair of trousers or jeans that we love and hate to throw them out. Sewing machines also work great for those who like personalizing item with monograms and embroideries. Sewing for your home is quite labor-consuming; drapes and upholstery require lots of fabric and professional-grade equipment for precise sewing notions, such as rivets and hooks. Still, you can create simple drapes and even roman blinds on your basic sewing machine. Dont forget about quilting that once fuelled the sewing machine craze. It seems like patchwork is coming back, and many fashion designers even use elements in their collections. Sewing machines are indispensable for crafts, which are a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day. Studies have shown that sewing reduces stress! When sewing something, no matter for what purposes, people achieve something that gives them a lasting satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. Besides, hand-made simple purses, gift bags for wine bottles, tablecloths and napkins make wonderful and thoughtful gifts. And who knows, maybe after you discover the joys of sewing, you will decide to move forward and open a small sewing business to create and sew unique pieces of clothing. Many upscale boutiques and fashion fairs feature such mini-collections often sewn on simple household sewing machines. Kathryn Whittaker writes articles on a number of different topics.
